"The Flying Piano"
as a Restaurant and  Art Gallery / The Concept of Pedro
“The Flying Piano” – representing a musical fairy tale- was published by Pedro as a Swiss citizen end of 1993. The image of the “Flying Piano” has similarities to the “flying carpet” as we know it in the arabian fairy tales. In the following musical fairy tale, it’s as if the “Flying Piano” plays the role as a hero. On one side he appears as a musician, a singer, a stringend instrument in the evening skies of Thurgau – a flying object, that however has explicit landing prohibition on Swiss territory….a persona non grata!

The saver of the day is symbolized by a small “barn-owl” in a park of a psychiatric clinic, which spreads out it’s veil to enable a save landing to the falling wing (grand piano). This marks the beginning of a love story. A dialogue evolves between music and language – a language of fairy tale. In the morning the wing (grand piano) has disappeared. On it’s wings it made it’s journey to the east – to Indonesia, to Bali.

In Bali Pedro, as the musician (piano) and author to the “Flying Piano”, developed a third dimension to it. In the nineties a total of 12 sculptures were born (6 large-sized and 6 miniatures).

The “Flying Piano” made of wood (Garuda), bamboo and iron were exhibited in public in the Hilton Hotel Nusa Dua in 1995. It was a succesful attempt to achieve a combination of music and language into a three dimensional shape of the same themes. Thus begins the phase of visual shapes.

When Pedro opened a restaurant in August 2004, it was obviously named “The Flying Piano”. The first investment to it was an outstanding secondhand Yamaha Grand Piano from Tokyo.

On 12th of October 2002, when a suicide bomb detonated Bali and tore 202 people into death – among them over  85 Australians – Pedro was motivated to publish another book with the title “Amor and Amok in Bali”. “Amor” referring to a love story that coincidentally took place at the same time of the catastrophe. “Amok” as a synonym to the catastrophe it self (runner amuck).

This book of  plates with illustrations of the sculptures, respectively was replenished by pictures of the sculptures, since in the meantime the sculptures had been stolen (sold).

The latest creative phase took place in 2007 during his visits to Bangkok and Kathmandu, where Pedro discovered his new passion to collect tibetan and nepali Mandalas. By summer “The Flying Piano” restaurant additionally turned into an art-gallery.

In the spirituality of Buddhism, singing, mind and shapes meet in an incomparable way as a synthesis. The association with this world of spirituality gave the author the characteristics of gates, apertures or manifestations that lead to the cosmos.

The Mandalas of the Himalaya has inspired Pedro to endless amount of creations, which have their roots in Tibet.

It is not a coincidence, that our Tibet – Exhibition falls on the same time as the Olympic Games 08.08.08 in China. It is meant as a recognition to a FREE TIBET. The freedom of a soul should always be the freedom of sport competition in order to let rivalities dominate! All friends of Buddhism are welcome at our TIBET EXHIBITION!
